Scientific Academic Program (SAF)

The SAF inaugurated on 25th January 2008 with a view to provide an appropriate platform for nursing personnel & students to present papers on various contemporary topics and paves the way for regular exchange of scientific updates. This is an important milestone in the annals of KGNC.

Multi –Disciplinary Teaching /Learning Programme

Integrated Teaching Program, was started up to bridge the gap between nursing education and practice. This well accepted effective educational strategy for students enables them to know and promote holistic approach to patients and their problem. This will enhance both quality of education which include knowledge, attitude & practice and also quality patient care. ITP focuses on topics in specialties of nursing which is scheduled once in three months in rotation for all departments in nursing.

Mind Mapping Learning Strategy

Mind mapping learning strategy was developed with the objective of enhancing the learning skills of all students and especially students who needs additional curricular support and as innovative method of teaching learning process. Our institute had designed this mind mapping learning model from July 2016 onwards and being provided to our nursing students.

BLS Training

BLS Training was initiated with the objective to provide optimal training to the outgoing students using the state of the art simulation lab of SBV certified  by American Heart Association which is a must know component of every student who will be transforming to a clinical nurse . KGNC takes keen interest to train all the students passing out from KGNC who carry prestigious certificate by AHA.

Mentor- Mentee

Mentor mentee works with the objective to identify students’ area of strength and weakness and to provide guidance and support by creating an atmosphere of openness where meaningful communication and trust can exist. One faculty will be allotted ten students from all 4 batches. The mentees are instructed to meet their mentor on last Friday of every month on to share their difficulties faced by them both personally and professionally.

Breast Feeding Counseling Unit

Department of Child Health Nursing provides educative and counselling services on regular basis on every Thursdays for Antenatal & Postnatal mothers in post natal wards of MGMCRI, focusing on the Importance of breast feeding, Techniques of breast feeding, Exclusive breast feeding for the first 6 months & to continue breast feeding along with weaning and Common problem faced by the mothers during feeding.

Immunization Counseling Unit

The Department of Child Health Nursing provides educative and counselling services on regular basis on every Wednesdays at Paediatric Outpatient Department, MGMCRI, focusing on the National Immunization schedule, the importance of Vaccination, Care of child before and after vaccination.

Adolescent Counseling Unit

Adolescent counseling service meets the needs of the adolescents and their demands whenever needed. This service provides adequate counseling to the students in KGNC, adolescents residing at Baby Sarah’s Home, Ariyankuppam and at schools in Puducherry towards emotional stabilization, conflict resolution, career guidance, personal hygiene, menstrual hygiene, self protective measures etc,.This service introduces basic theory and practical counseling skills that help adolescents in meeting various needs, offers adolescents who access the service the time and space in which to work through or resolve the issues that contribute to their distress with the support of a counseling team. Teen Counseling is an ‘adolescent friendly’ service and as such, our aim is to enable young people and their care takers deal with difficulties, within the context of the group.

Reproductive Health Unit

Reproductive Health Unit focuses on the Constellation of methods, techniques and services that contribute to reproductive health and well-being of women and adolescent girls through prevention and management of reproductive health problems. The growing menace of teenage pregnancy, infertility, cervical cancer, and anemia related complications are endangering the life of female population and young adolescent girls. These current issues could be well handled and prevented by the health care professionals through screening services, Awareness programmes, distribution of informational pamphlets, CD’s, and Self instructional modules. Right to health information is every patient’s demand. The demand and expectation of every mother attending the Obstetrics & Gynecology outpatient department are well taken care. Present day adolescent girls do have poor life style practices which would lead to infertility in future. This has to be corrected or modified when they are in teens. Focusing all issues, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecological nursing has taken its first step to provide adequate health care which will satisfy and ensure the multi-dimensional expectation of the health consumers of Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and Hospital, Puducherry by establishing a “Reproductive Health Unit” for the betterment of all women in the society.

Remedial Classes for SNACS (Students Needing Additional Curricular Support)

Remedial classes for Students Needing Additional Curriculum Support are being conducted for students to overcome their learning difficulties through mind mapping to improve the learning skill of the students and thereby academic outcome also get improved. Special coaching classes after college hours with students and parents cooperation is being conducted.

Training of Anganwadi Workers

As an Innovative practice, Department of Community Health Nursing, KGNC started to train and empower Anganwadi workers to assess the health status of people and educate towards health promotion, referrals etc. Meeting the problems like over population, malnutrition, poverty, poor maternal & Child Health etc need high number of medical & health professionals. As there is shortage of skilled Professionals, Anganwadi system has been used as tool to meet the goal of enhanced health facilities made available,  affordable and accessible to local population. Thus, KGNC has taken the mission in training & empowering the anganwadi workers at their workplace regarding anthropometric measurements for under fives, Antenatal, Postnatal related health education, health awareness on nutritional supplements for children, referrals.

Telephonic Nursing

Telephonic nursing is a latest & recent trend in health care delivery prevalent among developed and developing countries. As an innovative idea KGNC had started Telephonic Nursing from 2015. Telephonic Nursing refers to the Nursing service rendered using telecommunications and information technology where a large physical distance exists between patient and nurse. Telephonic nursing is achieving a large rate of growth, due to several factors. Driving down the costs of health care, an increase in the number of aging and chronically ill population, and the increase in coverage of health care to distant, rural, small or sparsely populated regions. Among its many benefits, telephonic nursing may help to solve immediate health problems, to reduce distances and save travel time, and to keep patients healthy within their homes.

  • Regular Periodical Health Check-Up is been conducted and documented.
  • Adolescent counselling is provided on the topic Menstrual Hygiene, Sex Education, Education against Sexual Harassment, Personal Hygiene and Safety Measures.
  • Vocational training like basket making, bead works, candle works, craft works are been taught by our faculty members and students.
  • Psycho education and counselling is provided in different sessions based on the welfare and interest of the client.
