BOARD OF STUDIES ACTIVITIES

The board of studies activities is carried out by the faculty of the department Professors, Associate Professors, Lecturers, Asst. Lecturers, Tutors; Clinical Instructors are in- charge for B.Sc (N) & P.B.B.Sc (N) students and Professors, Asso. Professors and Lecturers are In-charge for M.Sc (N).
The required hours are allotted to Mental Health Nursing by respective class coordinators the units are allotted to all the faculty members by the HOD, All the faculty members in the department should have a clinical supervision of students In the hospital especially psychiatric ward.

The methods of evaluation In the theory is done by conducting unit test, giving assignments & case presentations, procedures, drug presentation, therapy, measurements like counseling, psycho education rehabilitation, psychotherapy, community mental health centre visit & report, field visit to mental health agencies, daily diary maintaining, occupational therapy, group therapy, behavior therapy techniques counsel and educate patient and family members In the hospital of psychotic department by the performance appraisal of the students in each rotation & practical examination. The examinations are conducted in the month of August for B.Sc (N), July for P.B.B.Sc (N) & M.Sc (N).

TEACHING LEARNING AND EVALUATION

Academic Plan

The department of psychiatric nursing has established in the year of 2003 with the objective to assist students in developing expertise and iin-depth understanding In the field of psychiatric nursing.

Our KGNC has affiliated to Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth Deemed University in the year of 2009. We are following the curriculum and co-curricular activities under the guidance of Board of Studies for B.Sc (N), Master/Clinical Rotation Plan made to meet the requirements of theory and practical hours, like 90 hrs & 360 hrs respectively. To accomplish this students are sent to various mental health hospital and centre such as divine care centre for rehabilitation, sacred heart hospital paynkulam, Mental Health Centre, Oolampara, Trivandrum, Kerala for this clinical posting. For M.Sc (N) 150 hrs in theory and 650 hrs in practical, total 800 hrs, their students are also sent to above mentioned hospital along with NIMHANS, Bangalore.

Ratio of teachers to students is allotted for UG 1:10 and PG 1:5, clinical supervision and other activities are guided by above mentioned ratio. Academic plans are made for class teaching, lecture, demonstration, seminar, symposium, Reni discussion, clinical presentation, assignments, workshop, conference, health education, etc., and extracurricular activities

During clinical session students are supervised for various procedures like history collection, MSE, ECT other therapies and administration of medication. Registers are maintained for over all activities.

Internal assessment marks for theory documented based on the students performance in unit test, sessional revision test, model exam 40%, assignments 10%, record and class teaching 10%, attendance 20%, discipline and conduct 20%. In practical assessment done for 50% in practical exam 10%, viva 5%, record completion 10%, Clinical evaluation 2%, spotters 8%, case study 5%, assignment 10%, attendance. Based on the overall performance slow learner students are identified and arranged tutorial classes, counseling session, participation In other activities based on the Individual needs. Mentor mentee programmes highlighted for special needy students. Result register provides the Information about progress of the student. Students are graded according to their performance -excellent, distinction, first class, second class, average and poor. From I batch - 111 batch 100% result in psychiatric nursing and IV batch 99%-Distinction. First class, second class students are awarded for their best performance in theory & clinical.

We maintain feedback for faculty and students to analyze and improve quality of teaching arid learning practices

Mentor - Mentee Programme
Our department has mentor - mentee programme in that we divide the students according to their needs among the faculty In order to provide a one to one education. In this slow learners are identified and given a special coaching. High achievers are identified and encouraged them to participate many state, regional and national level competitions. Problem behaviors also identified and remedial measures have been given. Mr. Nithyanandam, IV semester, B.Sc., (N) bagged second prize in the national level essay competition.

STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES

GRIEVANCE REPORT
Mental health nursing dept believes team work. We provide coimtant support and guidance fin- the students. We encourage the students to express their grievances and solve in department level and final report will be discussed with principal and higher authority.

Counseling
Student who had education career, personal problems has been given with individual counseling sessions either by class teacher or subject teacher special counseling sessions also arranged students those who are in need. Separate register also maintained for the same.

Parent Teacher Interaction
Frequent absentees, behavioral problem students were identified. Special parent teacher interaction arranged. Parents came with their opinion & ideas to change the student’s behavior. Progress of the students was sent for the parents every month, Feedback Iron) the parents also collected. Telephonic interaction u154 encouraged for the problem oriented beta br.

Motivational Programme:
Slow learners arc encouraged to get good marks. High achievers are identified and given multiple tasks to improve their talents and skills. Even they are encouraged to panic impact various innovative programme and competitions.

Governance & leadership - Discipline and culture, functioning of various bodies and activity reports including monthly departmental meetings, implementation of university and dean directions.

Discipline & Culture:
The students are high disciplined and they abide by the rules & regulations laid down by the college. They are punctual and they maintain their dress code. Students who fail to follow to rules & a regulation is brought to the notice of the Principal and necessary disciplinary action is taken.

Students actively participate in mental health day celebrations, panel discussions, seminar etc., They submit their assignments, care plan & case studies in time.

The students are well behaved; they maintain their dignity and keep up the name of the profession.

Activity Reports Pertaining to Department of Mental Health Nursing
As a part of the World Mental Health Day every year department of psychiatric nursing conducting programmes for students & community students actively participate In these programme both In hospital as well as In the community setup and they create awareness among community. Inter-collegiate Quiz competition is conducted in scientific academic forum behalf of psychiatric programme, Apart from these, students do participate in posters, essay competition, rally organized by psychiatric department, MGMC & Ri.

Students too are taken for observational visit school for mentally & physically challenged and social welfare department. Every year students visit, Trivandrum, Mental Health Center for psychiatric nursing postings, The students submit their report and they are much benefitted as they have a direct observation which has got a lasting expression in their minds.

Departmental Meetings:
Every month departmental meeting held that will be chaired by the Head of the Department of Mental Health Nursing. Discussion regarding the classes, unit allotment and clinical for B.Sc (N), P.B.B.Sc (N) & M.Sc (N) was held on.

B.Sc (N)
Regarding B.Sc (N) the total student group was divided among 7 faculties. The subject units were directed among all faculty theory block was planned for the month of June 2009, following which was the partial block till the month of Nov 2009. It was decided that units test should be conducted after its completion.

It was emphasized that records should be submitted every week. Spot test for mental health nursing was planned to enhance the knowledge of the students.
Various suggestions & opinion was given by faculty to boost up the internal assessment of the March the meeting came to an end.

Follow-up meeting held, student’s Improvement was discussed. Slow learners were identified. Mentor Meritee progress initiated. Tutorial classes also arranged. Issues related to classes were discussed.

M.Sc (N)
The syllabus was discussed in detail and unit allotment for the faculty was done. Project & seminar topic were discussed regarding domical posting, affiliation with other mental health institutions were discussed. Trivandrum, Mental Health Center, NIMHANS, Bangalore, Sacred Heart Hospital, Payankulam were identified. Affiliation letter were sent for the institution

TEACHING PRACTICES
The department of MHN follows various Innovative practices which go a long way in building and strengthening the department.

 1) Role Play:
Students enact various topics which will be easily understood by the public and health care team members.

 2) Poster Presentation:
A theme related to the subject and (Psychiatric conditions) is chosen and students are asked to prepare poster based on the theme and motivate and guided the students. Winners are encouraged with prizes.

 3) Quiz:
Quiz competitions are conducted on important days related to ‘Mental Health Nursing’ (World Mental Health Day, Suicidal Prevention Day, Alzheimer’s Day, Anti Drugs Day & World Elderly Day) or in collaboration with SAF - KGNC.

4) Vital Days Celebration:
All Important days are celebrated by conducting either seminars or panel discussion, based on the theme for mental health day. E.g.: June 26-Anti drugs day, Sep-21 World Alzheimer’s day, Sep 10- World Suicidal Prevention Day, Oct 1-World Elderly Day, Oct 10-World Mental Health Day, Nov 17-World Epilepsy Day, Dec 8-National Day of Mentally Challenged.

5) Coaching:
Class schedules are put-up regularly and it is seen to it that the students are given intense coaching as per schedule.

6) Special Coaching for Slow Learners:
Based on the internal assessment marks and the general performance in the class, some of the slow-learners are separated. Special coaching classes are planned and carried out. Special attention is given for these students, so that they are better prepared to face the exam, students are did successful.

7) Progress Report:
A report of the academic, performance of each student, along with their conduct, is sent to the parents, once every 3 months.

8) Self Development:
Students have ample opportunity to develop themselves by participating in SAF, Journal Club, RRC, ITP, NSS etc.

9) Group Research:
Students take up the task of conducting research on ‘Evidence Based Practices’0 Groups. This is done in hospital set-up.

10) Feedback:
A sincere feedback on the activities of the department in received from the students, faculty and HOD. This helps to know both the positive and negative.

11) Interactive Sessions:
Apart from the lectures, interactive sessions are held with the students. This session help the students to come out with doubts that are clarified by the teachers. Also, specific valuable points towards the development of the department are discussed.

12) Subject Records:
As on innovative approach, record books were given to the students. Important topics and diagrams were indexed. Students complete the same within the stipulated time & submit to the teachers which are them evaluated. This is done so that, students are prepared for the examination in not only the theoretical past, but also diagrams.

13) Mentor - Mentee Programme:
Since individual attention is not possible within the constraints of a classroom, the students are divided among the faculty of this department. Each individual student is given special care & attention. This makes the student to put in more effort and the result of this combination effort by the teacher & the student is well - seen during the exams.

14) Psycho-Drama:
The students are conducted psycho-drama related to mental health nursing topics and conditions. Student enacts various topics which will be easily understood by public.

15) Role play
Students enact the clinical situation and bring the Change In transaction of information

16) Occupational therapy
Students are encouraged to participate in occupation therapy to give confidence in promoting de institutionalization movement.

17) Activity therapy  
Student motivated to do many activities like music , yoga and recreations to keep the client active all time

18) Model
Students prepared the models of various mental health topic to prove "doling by knowing"
