Role and Primary Functions of OBG Department

Role and primary function of the department and its contribution to health care: The primary function of the department is to provide nursing education, nursing practice and nursing research contributing in comprehensive maternal and child health in all the programmes - B.Sc. (N), P.B.B.Sc. (N) and M.Sc. (N)

A. Nursing Education:

  • Plan, implement and evaluate the programme.
  • Impart quality education to all the students in the department.
  • Apply innovative teaching strageties that enhances learning outcome of the students.
  • Ensure excellent academic performance in theory and practical examination.
  • Facilitate self-development in department of OBG through Scientific Academic Forum, Journal Club, and Integrated Teaching Programme.
  • Conduct systematic evaluation of the student by using various evaluative methods.

B. Nursing Practice:

  • Train the students to develop desirable attitude and skill in providing comprehensive care of antenatal, postnatal mothers and neonates.
  • Carry out clinical presentation, demonstration, nursing rounds, bedside clinic, incidental teaching, viva-voce, spot test, health education and drug presentation.
  • Appraise the clinical performance, care note and record book.
  • Endow with hands on training to the students.
  • Extend professional services to the community.
  • Offer intensive training in the areas of antenatal OPD, postnatal ward, labour room, post-operative unit, NICU and OG operation theatres.

C. Nursing Research:

  • Participate actively towards promotion of individual/group research activity.
  • Identify the thrust areas of research related to OBG nursing in the hospital and community setting.
  • Utilized the research findings through oral/poster presentation and journal publication. Guide and properly channel the students in recently needed research activities.

D. Contributions to Health Care:

  • Actively participate in immunization clinic.
  • Participate in Intensive Pulse Polio Immunization Programme.
  • Conducting antenatal clinic services in local areas by checking anthropometric measurements, general physical examination, abdominal assessment, basic investigation among pregnant women, and doing referrals in case if any high risk is found.
  • Health education is conducted in the clinical area of various topics such as antenatal and postnatal exercises, importance of antenatal visit and immunization, diet during pregnancy, preparation for safe delivery, methods of family planning, etc.
  • Mass health education programmes are conducted through role play, lilliput mime, puppet show to educate pregnant women.
  • Commemorate breast feeding week in community and hospital, neonatal week.
  • Participates in comprehensive health care.
